For ABC Radio ‘Pacific Scientific’: In the Kikori Delta, a fisheries gold rush.

A while back I was lucky enough to spend a couple of days with the awesome Yolarnie Amepou – zoologist, turtle mama and tireless activist for threatened humans and non-humans – as she went about her business in the Kikori Delta, Papua New Guinea. I’ve previously written about what she showed me of how rising seas are swamping villages and forcing moves inland. Now the radio documentary we made has (finally!) gone to air on ABC Radio Australia/Radio Pacific. So you can listen to Yolarnie tell the stories of the delta and the threats it is facing, from king tides pushing every higher and exploding, unregulated gilnet fishing for fish maw (fish bladder) for the Chinese market. Check it out – from the latest series of the ABC’s Pacific Scientific program, highlighting the work of Pacific scientists. Love your work Yolarnie Amepou! https://www.abc.net.au/pacific/programs/pacific-scientific/fisheries-goldrush-paves-the-way-for-png-community-to-rebuild-/103794102?utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared
