Finalist: Eureka Prize for Science Journalism

Absolutely thrilled to be announced as a finalist for the 2023 Australia Museum Eureka Prizes – the Oscars of science! – in the science journalism category. The nomination is for a story that has been a big part of my reporting life over many years – the quest for the million year ice core: Buried Treasure in Griffith Review. It’s also about the entanglement of so many things with the science – adventure, politics, the ambitions and weaknesses of humans working alone and collectively. I’m indebted to so many scientists over so many years for helping me find my way in this formidable landscape – especially glaciologist Tas van Ommen and ice politics guru Tony Press. And of course to Australia’s most sweetly formidable and fabulous editor, Ashley Hay. You can find a link to the story here: paywall is removed. Or check out the video and other fabulous finalists – congratulations Mikey Slezak and Nicky Phillips!: htt
